Electrical Contractor / Electrical Nominee / Management Representative FAQs
To complete the Electrical Nominee (WAE200) portion of the Electrical Contractor Course, you MUST hold an unrestricted WA electrical licence.
If you are only completing the Management Representative (EA103B & EA102) portion of the course, you do not have to be a licenced electrician.
To hold an Electrical Contractor licence in WA, you must show competency in two areas:
RPL Assessment: If you are able to demonstrate more than 5 years of experience operating a business, you may be eligible to apply for a Recognition of Prior Learning assessment for EA102 only. Please contact the office to assess your eligibility to enrol for RPL – info@combinedskills.com.au. If you are successful in your RPL assessment of EA102, module EA103B can be completed via correspondence.
Therefore, it is possible for two individuals to hold an Electrical Contractor licence together ie. One could be registered as the Electrical Nominee and the other could be registered as the Management Representative of the electrical contracting business.
No. It was developed by WA regulator Building and Energy – Department of Energy, Mining, Industry Regulation and Safety specifically for our state. It will not appear in your USI profile.
No. The Electrical Nominee portion of the Electrical Contractor course must be completed face-to-face due to the practical assessments required for verification of competency.
Please see ‘How do I become a WA Electrical Contractor’ for more information on how to demonstrate competency for the Management Representative portion of the Electrical Contractor course.
All prospective WA Electrical Contractor licence holders MUST complete Electrical Nominee (WAE200) training. This is a requirement of the regulator Building and Energy – Department of Energy, Mining, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS).
You can use your current interstate licence to gain mutual recognition of the Management Representative (EA103B & EA102) portion of the WA Electrical Contractor licence.
For example, if you are a Registered Electrical Contractor in Victoria, to gain a WA Electrical Contractor licence you MUST:
- Undertake Electrical Nominee (WAE200) training
- Complete the section in the relevant WA Electrical Contractor application form, requesting
Evidence of Competency for the Management Representative (your current registration as an electrical contractor in another Australian State or Territory) - Provide a Certificate of Currency issued within the last 30 days for public liability cover in the name of the applicant/business
The Electrical Nominee portion of the EC course is 5 days (Monday – Friday) and you will be given a Design Assignment to complete in your own time at the end of this module. You have 4 weeks to submit this for assessment.
The Management Representative course is also 5 days (Monday – Friday) and you are expected to submit a Business Plan within 8 weeks of finishing this module. We provide a template.
Yes. You can choose which week-long blocks suit you to attain both Electrical Nominee and Management Representative competency. ie. Enrol into Electrical Nominee training in February and enrol into Management Representative training in June.
WA regulator Building & Energy deem your competency to have lapsed:
After 2 YEARS for Electrical Nominees if you have:
AND
After 5 YEARS for Management Representatives if you have:
All Electrical Contractors must show competency for both Electrical Nominee and Management Representative modules so, if has been longer than 2 years, but less than 5 since you completed the course or were last registered with Building & Energy (Energy Safety), then you would only need to complete Electrical Nominee training again.
If it has been longer than 5 years, you will need to redo the full Electrical Contractor course again.

The short answer is, no, not right away.
There are four Standards – at the minimum - that you are required to refer to when working as an Electrical Contractor and we provide these Standards, electronically, for you to use during your training. While we do recommend students have their own copies so they can make annotations, it is not necessary for you to have them until you are working as an Electrical Contractor. If you do wish to purchase them, we have hard copies available at reception. However, you can also purchase them direct from the publisher – Intertek Inform (previously SAI Global) – where they give you the option to buy hardcopy, electronic and/or printable copies.
Our pricing is here if you would like to reserve a hardcopy. We have also provided the links if you would like to purchase direct from the publisher.
